Basic Web Design Tutorial Part 2

Example 2 – a more complex page using more HTML tags

<html>
<head>
<title>The Hello World Page v2</title>
</head><body>
<h1>Hello World!</h1>
<p>
Because I love the world
and it is great.
</p>
<p>
And I love HTML.
</p>
</body>
</html>

Example 2 (opens in a new browser window)

Now the page contains a heading (inside the H1 tag – titles come in increasingly small sizes H1, H2, H3, etc) and 2 paragraphs of text (inside the P tags).

Now this brings me on to an important issue: whitespace. It doesn’t matter how many spaces, tabs and carriage returns I put in between two words, it will be turned into one space in the page. This makes it easier to edit the HTML documents without worrying about putting in an extra space in an odd place. More complex issues of spacing are resolved with paragraphs or you can force a line break with <br /> (this is an example of an empty tag – it’s a start and end tag together which requires no content, so is written like this – more on this later on images).
